Shronebirrane, also known as Drumminboy,
stands by the road at the head of the mountainous Drimminboy valley. A multiple
stone Irish recumbent circle, of an original thirteen stones, six circle stones
still stand including the eastern portal (2.6m) and a nicely graded arc of three
stones . Two stones lie fallen and the recumbent at the southwest looked as
though it had tilted over a little. The photo above shows what we thought were
both of the portal stones aligned on the recumbent, as you can see, this line is
way off the circle centre. We later realised that, in fact, only the eastern
portal had survived (centred in photo), and its companion was actually a tall
circle stone.
We spotted some striking black concentric markings on the inner faces of the
stones in the eastern arc. Resembling painted versions of cup and ring carvings,
we suspect them to be the result of lichen growth.
