The massive 3.2m tall quartz pillar used as an outlier at Balquhain.
This photo really illustrates a feature of
the circle that seems to have been overlooked, despite being shot in overcast
conditions,
note how white and reflective both the outlier and the recumbent are compared to the
other stones. The massive quartz outlier is totally
unique in RSCs and is only this reflective on this one face, the 10 ton+
recumbent is of white granite which may have been
obtained with some pains from a distant location (4)
and also has this unusual flatness on its outer face only.
Given a totally dark landscape covered in vegetation, these two stones would
shine brilliantly in the moonlight to any observers
to the south of the circle with a good sightline, the outlier probably still
does.
