Skene's plan of Contin
matches modern plans dimensionally, but has a few problems in other respects.
The causeway is shown as interrupting the outer bank which is typical of Class 1
henges, unfortunately the
causeway at Contin does not penetrate the bank, which is continuous in
that area. This is a curious local trait
seen at Contin and several other henges in the vicinty.
Lastly, the causeway is shown as being orientated "Due East" when in fact it is
aligned to the ESE.
Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, 87, p.73-8, 1952-3.
This plan matches the
measurements we took at the site perfectly. It also correctly shows the ESE
alignment
of the causeway and the way the bank continues unbroken across the causeway end.
The section diagram
shows the typical henge profile, the bank being higher than the ground surface
and internal space due to the
heaping of the material excavated during the formation of the ditch.
As usual, our sincere
thanks to the Society for allowing use of material from its most excellent
Proceedings.
