Archaeologia Scotia, 3. p.211-22, 1831.
This is Anderson's plan
drawing of Cullearnie made from his visit in the 1820's.
The two inner circles of stones are the unmistakable structure of a ring-cairn,
and the outer stone circle conclusively
identifies this a Clava Ring-Cairn. Anderson's plan shows 18 stones in the outer
ring, but he mentions 15 in the
accompanying text, the usual count for this type of monument is 9-12. Using the
spacing and locations of the two remaining
stones to extrapolate a ring produces a count of 13, the true number could only
be found by excavation.
It looks as though most of
the cairn fill had been removed before Anderson's visit, and after this, but
before 1880,
all but two of the circle stones were removed, as were five of the inner
kerbs
and the vast majority of the outer kerbs.
As usual, our sincere
thanks to the Society for allowing use of material from its most excellent
Proceedings.
