Fred's diagram of Lagmore.
This compares well with modern plans, although Fred seems to have thought that
there were three rings of kerb stones.
This is not surprising given the confused nature of the site, this difficulty was even
commented on by Audrey Henshall when she visited many years later.
We are big fans of Fred's
work and take every opportunity to show just how accurate his illustrations are.
We have sandwiched Fred's view of Lagmore with our
modern photo, although the viewpoints are different and we used an ultrawide lens, just look at how well Fred's drawing matches!
Once more we are in awe of
Fred's skill, he even captures the larger textures on the stones faithfully. It
was not until we started doing
these comparisons that we realised just how accurate (and totally free of lens
flare!) his drawings were.
Fred's drawing of the
passage entrance remains.
Fred thought that this setting was a cist with a rotated capstone. He cleared
the "chamber" of debris and found the paving stones
meticulously detailed above. He also incorrectly interpreted a jumble of displaced kerbs
near the western circle stone as being the remains
of yet another cist.
As usual, our sincere
thanks to the Society for allowing use of material from its most excellent
Proceedings.
