Marionburgh - Antiquarian Illustrations
Fred Coles
Proceedings of the
Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, 41, p.152, 1907.
Fred Coles' plan of Marionburgh in
1907.
The site was exactly as shown above on our visit in 2010. Unfortunately Fred did
not include an illustration
of Marionburgh in his paper which is a shame because we really enjoy his
sketches. Apparently, he had
similar problems recording the site due to vegetation, as we did, as he writes
"But the interior is
an utter wilderness of weeds and luxuriant raspberry bushes, which almost
completely overgrow
the fallen Stones and conceal more than half of those still standing, so that it
is impossible
to obtain an entire view of the Circle from any one point."
As usual, our sincere
thanks to the Society for allowing use of material from its most excellent
Proceedings.
