This photo shows the entire outer section of the passage where it runs through the primary cairn
casing, it is 3.70m long and 0.65m at its widest, the entrance area. Farrer (2) tells us that this section
was still roofed with edge-set lintels during his investigations of 1868, but these had disappeared by
Childe's (4) excavation of 1951. This section of the passage was paved with five large slabs which did not
 run under the side walls.
The exposed lintel that can be seen over the current entrance is the first of those roofing the section which runs
through the cairn core to the chamber itself. The neatly faced "V" cut through the cairn casing is a modern
contrivance intended to expose the inner structures of the cairn for visitors.
