Stenness

Internal stone setting from the WSW.
These two erect stones were set in concrete and a third upright stone was added during the "refurbishments" of 1906-7, the large slab was placed upon the tripod thus formed to make
a fanciful "dolmen". The "dolmen" was toppled in 1972 and the setting was left in the configuration above after Ritchie's excavations of 1973. There is no record of what happened to
the stones during the refurbishment and Ritchie could not investigate their situation because of the concrete. With so much disturbance to this setting it is uncertain if any of the stones
are in their original positions. Maes Howe can be seen just above the inner edge of the right-hand stone, but given the lack of a foreground sight and the uncertainty regarding the stones'
original situations, this "alignment" may be coincidental.
