South Ythsie seems to have been cleaned up quite a bit since our visit in 1987. As well as the six stones that now make up the site, our photos show there were several other boulders about the circle then, and some of these were as big as the present circle stones. The field was in crop during our 1987 visit and we could not get a close look at the stones extant then, so perhaps the "extra" stones were just field clearance, and were not embedded. Described as an ellipse, Ythsie is quite irregular in form and it has been suggested that it is a transitional form of the four poster type of stone circle. The stones stand on a raised platform, which is probably the remnants of the "mound" mentioned by Burl, this is thought to have been added after the circle was constructed.
