It is apparent from this photo that the hillside was cut away to incorporate the
cairn structure. On excavation, a solid rock face was visible through
a gap in the walling of the northern cell. Considering the effort involved,
there must have been an important reason for locating the cairn here on a
sloping hillside rather than level ground.
The wooden box visible far right contains a torch thoughtfully provided for
ill-prepared visitors to explore the dark interior.
