The large diameter hemispherical hole top left, together with its twin opposite,
are
thought to have been used to lodge a wooden post across the doorway. In the
right centre
of shot are the two holes of a "V" groove fastening point, these two
holes meet within the stone
and allow a cord or strap to be securely anchored.
These closure arrangements can be seen at many Maltese temples, Tarxien, in
particular.
