In 1998
we could not find any mention of this circle in Burl
(1) (1979 edition), or any other of our reference books, so for our
purposes, we named it after the hill it stands on (Knockagarrane). Some years
later we noticed that the circle did eventually appear in a later revision of
his work in which Burl refers to it as Uragh SW, hence we have amended this page
with this name. We have left our old name for the circle in brackets to avoid
confusion for people who may have referred to this page in the intervening years.
The circle is built
on a terrace on the side of Knockagarrane, with views over Cloonee lough and
Lough Inchiquin. A large multi-stone Irish recumbent circle with a central
boulder burial, we counted eight stones standing and two fallen, although there
were several large stones on the surface and partially buried in the immediate
vicinity. The axial stone candidate and its neighbour to the east have been
incorporated into a dry stone field wall, and across the circle stand the two
tall portal stones. The central boulder burial is large, and the burial space beneath
has been dug into on the western side.
The Uragh NE circle stands only 800m to the
northeast and almost 100m below at the head of Loch Inchiquin, although
intervening vegetation prevented a direct sightline during our visit.
