During the excavations of 1966-9 it was
found that although the rear chamber roofstone was still in situ,
it was largely supported by the cairn rubble that filled the chamber. Two steel
joists were used to support
the roofstone during excavation and one of these was left in place at the end of
work as a safety measure.
