Image Wood (also known as Aboyne), is a curious ring of large stones closely set, lying in the grounds of Aboyne castle. Five stones have survived to the present day and all are standing, the original shape of the ring is unclear, but if the surviving stones are in their original positions, it was not a perfect circle. Burl suggests that there were originally six or seven stones in an elliptical configuration, but the only excavation seems to have been a crude investigation in 1904 when a trench was dug through the circle, only "black earth and cinders" were found. There have been suggestions that this is a "druidical" folly created in the nineteenth century.
