Quoyness

Quoyness from the SE.
The striking appearance of the cairn is artificial, it was left in this state after excavation so that its normally concealed structural
components would be visible to the modern visitor. The cairn core, which contains the chamber structure, is the drum-shaped
central mass that protrudes through the top of the cairn. The surrounding stonework is a combination of  the primary and secondary
casings, the "V" shaped cut through them is modern, originally this did not exist, the passage extending to within 2 metres of the outer
stonework seen above.
The above components are not the end of the cairn structure, the path above cuts through the platform which rises on either side and
surrounds the exposed stonework, this grassed over feature is huge, more than twice the diameter of the casing in places.
