The pedestal altar separating the inner southern apse from the temple
axis.
This small pedestal altar blocks
access to the inner southern apse from the terminal altar area
on the main temple axis. The altar is definitely a modern addition as this
area is shown as a
slab-lintelled doorway in photos from the 1930's. A mark on the upper surface of
the tall upright
slab on the right shows where the missing upper slab was cemented in place.
With the uncertainty about the original arrangements here, we cannot be certain
that traffic
through this space was blocked by an altar when the temple was in use.
