Mnajdra - Temple 2

The inner porthole doorway.

Very well preserved despite the broken upper lintel the portal houses a sharply defined porthole slab
which gives access to a tiny space whose rear wall is the northern slabs of the temple entranceway.
The room contains a small but elaborate double pedestal altar not visible in this shot.
Photos from 1930's and 1960's show a large transverse stone precariously lodged on the facade
above the northern side of the entrance portal. This position places the stone immediately above the
lintels in the photo above. As this stone is no longer in position, we suspect that its fall caused the
breakage of the upper lintel and may also have damaged some of the temple entrance flanking stones
which are also shown intact in the earlier photos.
