The inside face of the porthole entrance.
This is an inside view of the porthole
doorway which leads from the outer northern apse to the
intramural room. On the face within doorway itself is a well-preserved
"V" slot fastening point, the two
holes drilled at angles meet within the stone forming a "V" shaped
tube, cords could be passed through
this to give a strong fastening point for a door closure. Two further
"V" slots appear on the inner face of
the slab but these are heavily eroded and serve to illustrate the inner
structure of the holes.
Note how the entire inner face of the porthole slab has been worked to form a
rebate and then
a further relief has been worked on this face, this is particularly noticeable
along the upper edge
of the door opening.
